Midsummer Night's Scene

Oh! These glorious, balmy eves

illuminated by firefly light

and pearlescent moonglow

sheer exuberance in the air

and lusty, languid stars

bathing you in their sorcery...

Yes, Summer Solstice has passed, but, really,

as far as I can see,

it's Midsummer until it's Autumn.

And there is simply no need to end the sensual revelry.

Besides, who doesn't love a sparkly bit of brew to deepen the mood,

already so lovely and lush, so deeply divine?

My Midsummer gift to you, dear Beasties, lies within the plants...

Clockwise from left: Strawberry Starlight, Orange Sky, Venus Rising.

You guessed it.

Succulent cocktails derived from fresh herbs, voluptuous fruits, and delicate blossoms, with finely tuned magick in each sip. Beautifying and delicious, they can be enjoyed with or without alchohol, and are delectable either way!

Brew the tea the night before, using fresh herbs. Speak softly to them, gently coaxing their energies into your brew. Blend the strained tea with the fruit, and you can keep a beautiful glass vessel of it in your refrigerator. Add the spirits when you pour - a half-and-half ratio works well, but design it as you please. Garnish thoughtfully. Enjoy. And always remember to say thank you.

*Use organic or wild ingredients, fresh wherever possible, and dried when necessary.*

Strawberry Starlight

  • Basil tea - 5 large organic leaves in 1 C spring water
  • 3 strawberries
  • 1 fresh basil leaf (optional, if you want the basil stronger)
  • dry white wine

The purrfect Venus-Mars alignment! Sacred to Freya, love-infused strawberries are ruled by Venus and water. Basil is also a love plant, but ruled by fiery Mars. Together, they make a lusty connection with a bit of protective energy tossed in. And, though we always associate wine with Bacchus/Dionysus, the earliest wine deities were actually female. In ancient Mesopotamia, twelve vases per day of were offered to Ishtar! White wine is also lunar ruled...so sip this delightful drink beneath her white light.

Orange Sky

  • Mint tea - 6 organic leaves in 1 C spring water
  • 1/2 organic orange
  • juice of 2 lemon wedges
  • shot of gin

Oooh! This one is frisky! The citrus fruits are a well-balanced blend of both solar and lunar energies, making it an ideal afternoon libation also. Wild and fiery orange is ruled by the Sun, and though it possesses purification powers, it is actually known as a love stimulator. Mmmm! Lively lunar lemon brings love and happiness to the wise beholder, and with the sexual prowess of mint joining the party...you get the picture.
Gin can be substituted for vodka here, but it won't have the same effect. Gin is derived form juniper berries, and was traditionally used as herbal medicine . A protective plant, juniper offers stamina, good health and love...*wink*

Venus Rising

  • Rose tea - 1 Tbsp rose petals (fresh or dried), 1 tsp rose hips, 1 C spring water
  • 1-2 tbsp rosewater
  • 1 tsp pomegranate concentrate
  • champagne

I couldn't possibly go through a sultry Summer without this one, and neither should you. Rose, ruled by Venus herself, has been regarded as primary medicine, a powerful symbol of strength, and a supreme beautifier for ages. It is a flower of love and happiness, and heightens psychic awareness. Rose should be consumed, used topically, inhaled, gazed upon, and adored.
Pomegranate is a lucky fruit. It's a Mercury-fire powerhouse which brings forth creativity, money, and...fertility. So, yes, be careful, but I always see fertility from the artistic perspective. Literally, the ability to give new life. Just direct the energies where you want them. Oh, and add as much as you like for sweetening.
The champagne? Well, champagne is like drinking stars!

Midsummer Beauty

Midsummer, I thought you'd never arrive.

But here you are.

And I am head over heels in love with you.

In lust, too, with your Sun-kissed afternoons,

and and your sultry midnights.

I wanna bask in your firelight,

dance beneath your star sky,

sip your nectar,

until I am drunk with your pleasures.

Bare shoulders, bare legs, bare feet.

your heat,

with mine...

Revel in the deliciousness of these languid, lush moments, my Darlings.

It's all too fleeting.

The Summer Solstice is all about fulfillment. If you set some major intentions for the year back in Winter, ask yourself: Are you still aligned with those energies? Are you making strides on the physical plane to achieve your dreams? You have a beautiful opportunity to reinvigorate those energies right now.

Midsummer Night by Edward Robert Hughes.

Midsummer Night by Edward Robert Hughes.

I want to take your hand and guide you along the firefly path,

revealing beauty secrets along the way...

Here, my Cats, are my most beloved potions of Summer:

Alba Botanica Very Emollient Sunscreen  - How do I love thee? Let me count the ways: A UVA/UVB broad-spectrum SPF 30 that's chemical-free, water-resistant, made with skin-worshipping ingredients (aloe, lavender, chamomile, & vitamin E), and doesn't harm coral reefs. And did I mention? It's vanilla scent is intoxicating.  Really, it is. Come closer...

Mineral Fusion Mineral Beauty Balm SPF 30 - I am a rabid fan of DermaE's BB Créme most of the year, but I like to switch over to this one when it's very hot and humid, and skin is more prone to odd little breakouts. I also think it's great for people with oily skin. Its look is slightly chalky right out of the tube, like a zinc oxide sunscreen (which it contains), but absorbs completely once you blend it into the skin. The finished effect is purrfectly matte, leaving your face nourished and exquisite, even in the steamiest of situations...

Acure Organics Seriously Hydrating Toner - I adore this, all year long. That same light, soothing mist that calms dry or irritated skin all Winter long is a superstar cooling spritz and a post-sun lifesaver. Bonus: it will perk up a dull midday face even better than a smile from a sexy co-worker.

Alba Botanicals Very Emollient Sunless Tanner - My Mediterranean/Celtic heritage has gifted me a complexion that is at once both very fair and olive, which can often look pretty sallow. A mostly-raw diet has helped my skin immensely over the past two years, both in texture and in tone, giving me a much healthier, radiant look overall. But still...I want a golden glow. All the time. Possible? Yes! But I wouldn't use anything else. This sunless tanner is gorgeous: subtle, purrfectly natural looking, moisturizing, and free of nasty parabens and other dirty little chemicals. So, for an allover gleam, or to fill in a spotty day in the sun, this one is awesome.

Vapour Organics Solar Translucent Bronzer - Speaking of golden, oh my Goddess, this bronzing stick is fantastic!  The color is stunningly sheer, the texture sublime, and the tube holds more product than you may ever need in this lifetime. A must-have in your beauty bag.

Simplers Carrot Seed Essential Oil - My most beloved beauty oil. This deity is not only contains high levels of vitamin A, E, and beta carotene, it's also a powerful detoxifier and skin rejuvenator, offering a natural SPF of 40. I place a few drops in the palm of my hand mixed with a moisturizer or oil (argan and jojoba being my faves,) and massage it into my face every morning. Magic, indeed.

DIY Insect Repellant - Pick up a few cute 2 or 3oz spray bottles in the cosmetics/samples/travel section of your local department store for pennies, and fill them with witch hazel, rosewater, or lavender water (you can get the witch hazel there too, or in a pharmacy, and the flower waters in your health food store), add in 1/2 teaspoon of vodka (optional, as a preservative,) and  50-60 drops eucalyptus essential oil (recognized by the CDC as a natural replacement for DEET,) 20 drops cedarwood essential oil, 20 drops citronella oil, and 20 drops rosemary or lemon essential oil. Now add in your own signature oil, at least 12 drops, until it smells divine, like You, not You Covered in Bug Spray. Shake it all up. Keep one at home, stash one in the car, and one in your bag. Shake before each use, and give yourself a good spritz when you're outdoors. Even in a cafe at night, it's chic.

No Miss Nail Polish - You've seen this brand in almost every health food store, though only in a handful of the 150 luscious colors that the website offers. Glossy and quick-drying, these lacquers are free of harmful chemicals but contain sunscreens, are cruelty free, and are easy on your wallet. Do pick up their It's Dry Topcoat while you're at it - it will greatly extend the life of your home manicure. My Midsummer color pick? Crazily enough, the oddly named Winter Garden Wheat (pictured), which looks nothing at all like wheat, Winter or otherwise. It's a purrfectly peachy kitten dessert for your pretty claws that goes with absolutely everything.

Acure Organics Castile Soap - How can it be both refreshing and moisturizing? But it is! Get ready for anything with a splash of this as a body wash, bubble bath, household cleaner, animal shampoo, human shampoo, laundry soap...even a tooth cleanser! Excellent idea in a travel bottle, no? With gorgeous organic coconut, sunflower, castor and argan oils, you can't possibly go wrong. I adore the subtle Peppermint and Citrus scents, but my fave is the unscented, because you know me...I love to concoct potions. I like to add my own essential oil blends to this sublime base to suit my every mood. Note: This is a new product. Click here for a store locator.

Acure Organics Lip Lush - I'm not usually a fan of gloss, as it wavers between plastic-sticky and and runny-gooey. But ohh..this one.  Lush, plush, and unbelievably sensual, it delivers argan oil, Echinacea Stem Cell (increasing hydration and elasticity,) and the rockstar Eidelweiss Stem Cell (that not only contains antioxidants, but fights the breakdown of dermal layers and prevents breakdown of collagen,) all laced up in gorgeous sheer shades! My faves are the starlit Birthday Suit and juicy pink Shmexy. Now that, my bee-stung beauties, is gloss.

Now you're all ready, Lovers, for your Midsummer night's scene.
