The Cat's Eye Of The Storm

Spinning! Spinning! Spinning!

In between a pair of powerful eclipses

our quicksilver friend seems to twirl backwards

and Autumn rushes in to quicken our pulses...

Tell me, my Loves, are you feeling stressed?

the calm eye of the storm, always.

the calm eye of the storm, always.

Does everything feel like Iggy's "Lust For Life" pounding out of an amplifier in your brain
going 45 instead of 33?

For some it's back to school,
or back to work, after a holiday in the sun,
Or maybe it’s just Fall
and her sense of urgency to “do” something,
kicking up ideas like a child playing in piles of amber leaves...

No matter the why.

Your beautiful self needs a lifeline. And one just happens to appear.

A gift from Diana, Ancient Lady of The Beasts.
Mistress of Wild Things.

Her timing, as always, is purrfect.

Wild Things Brew

Per serving.

  • 1 tsp organic licorice root
  • 1 tsp organic cat's claw
  • 1 Tbsp organic Pau d'Arco
  • 1 stick organic cinnamon
  • 1 organic lemon wedge
  • Stevia to taste

Darlings, when your brain is overloaded, cortisol skyrockets, and your body begins to accelerate in its aging process. Are we going to allow that?!
Hell no!

Your adrenals need support like mad right now.
And this is almost too simple.

Simply gather your herbs from the local health food store bulk dried section. (Unless, of course, you just happen to be a master herbalist with a garden that would make any witch envious.)
If you can't forage nearby, wonderfully wildcrafted herbs can be had online, from places like Mountain Rose Herbs.

Now make your magical decoction:
First, connect with the herbs. Touch them, sing softly to them, thank them. Listen to their whisperings.  Visualize yourself navigating the deep waters of stress with grace and ease. Feel strength and resilience within you.
Got it? Good. Keep it going while you brew.

Bring 1 cup of pure water just to a boil. Add in your herbs and roots. Reduce the heat to barely a simmer, and let the mixture gently release for 20 minutes. Make sure you cover the pot, so the essential oils don't escape during the evaporation process.
Now you can turn off the heat and allow the decoction to sit for another couple of hours if you like. The longer it steeps, the more medicinal it actually gets.
Then a squeeze of lemon to allow absorption, a little bit of stevia to sweeten if you like, and you're ready!
It's actually quite delicious.

By the way....the difference, Beasties, between an infusion and a decoction is really just in the amount of time you let it stew. Infusions are best for leaves and petals, while a decoction gets to the insides of roots and bark.

Are you wondering about these mysterious little plant beings?
Well, this legendary healing trio is unsurpassed for adrenal support, recovery, and immune function. Seriously.
A must have for your natural medicine bag of tricks.

Get on it.

While your sipping your potion, consider the myriad things you can do to help manage during stressful times: yoga, getting outdoors, and getting your beauty sleep for starters. Concious breathing also helps immensely. (Can't get into that headspace? Try downloading the Buddhify app.)

And steer clear of junk food. I mean it-NO CRAP!
Yes, for thirty seconds you might enjoy that sugar-laden brownie. Or at least the cellular memory of it.
But you know what? Feeding your negative emotions is bullshit.
Moments later, you crash. You feel lousy. Your skin looks like hell. Your belly bloats.
And you didn't solve a thing.

Why on earth would you bother?

Step it up.
Eat some gorgeous fresh fruit when you crave sugar. Gnaw on nuts when you're so irritated you simply have to crunch on something. Wolf down a few kale chips when salt seems to be the answer. Exhausted? Drink water.

But feed yourself.

You are worth taking care of.

I wouldn't hang out with you otherwise,
now would I?

Something's Brewing

Baby, it's cold outside!

If you dwell in a climate of seasons,

you've most likely had a blast of dark, damp, chill shake you right out of a strangely warm Autumn,

propelling you headlong though frigid winds,

and dropping you down into full-on Winter.

"What is this? We didn't have this in Babylon."

"What is this? We didn't have this in Babylon."

It's beautiful.

But after the first delirious rush of fairytale scenes, it draws our attention inward, to an awareness that we are now susceptible to the lowered resistance that comes with a change in season. It's time to suit up into our armor, mount our steeds, and defend the castle walls which house our souls.

To fortify your gorgeous cells, and strengthen you from the inside out,

I've concocted an immune-revving potion that will have your cauldron bubbling over with warmth, witchy wellness, and all good things...

The secret ingredient? Mushrooms! The two most powerful medicinal healing mushrooms on Earth, reishi and chaga, join forces here to defeat those horrid, Orc-y germs trying to destroy your good health. Lovely, ancient spices are then added with a touch of creamy sweetness, for a comforting, cold weather delight.

Winter's Brew

For 1-2 servings:

  • 2 C unsweetened organic coconut milk
  • 3 pieces reishi
  • 2 pieces chaga
  • 6 star anise
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 9 cloves
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, peeled and cut into 3 pieces
  • 2 Tbsp coconut nectar
  • pinch of cayenne

***Note: you can purchase the chaga and reishi dried in the herb section (usually) of your local health food store. They can order it if it isn't on the shelves. Or, you can buy it online through Amazon, just check your source. If you can't find them dried, powders or tincture will work well also. Try health rockstar David Wolfe's site, or shop with the undisputed King of Mycellium, Paul Stamets.

Here we go, Beloved Ones...

Take three deep breaths, light your kitchen altar candle, and whisper your prayers of strength, fortitude, resilience. Pour the coconut milk into a saucepan. With intention, lay the reishi in first, then nestle the chaga in between. Thank them for their superior qualities, and for finding their way to you at exactly the right time.

Start a very low fire beneath the pan. Begin to expand your wishes with the help of the spices. Remember to visualize and feel each intention, and always thank your plant friends.

Arrange the ginger in amongst the mushrooms, for a little help in communicating with spirit.

Now gently, and with purpose, sprinkle the cinnamon in. That's for love. The kind you give yourself when you take good care of the body, and the kind you radiate outward into the world as a result.

The star anise are next. Set them in the brew like the gorgeous little creatures they are. More love.

Toss in those yummy little cloves next. They're here right now to protect you.

The brew should be getting warm now.

Remove the mushrooms, as they can be quite bitter if steeped too long, and keep warming the rest gently. How to you feel? Is your spell cast? Wonderful. Remove the pan from the heat. Add a pinch of cayenne for even more protective energy, then swirl in the coconut nectar. The coconut, by the way, is effective for inner purification if visualized well. And it's sweet.

"Ahh, now,  potions I understand..."

"Ahh, now, potions I understand..."

Now, my Loves, sip this deeply. Besides the magick within, there's serious plant medicine here. You can certainly prepare a lighter version, sans milk and sweetener, but it won't be as enjoyable. This is meant to fill you, body and spirit, so enjoy it.

I'll leave you know, Beasties,

with love and light,

Rockstar Ingredients: Turmeric

Such a stunningly beautiful spice.

I want to paint my walls to match.

Tantalizing turmeric appears often in these pages,

as you know, Ravishing Ones.

Because I'm obsessed with the magic of plants. And wellness. And life.

And it is my dearest wish to share it all with you.

As with most rockstar ingredients, turmeric is having her moment in the lights,

center stage and all the rage, but, of course, she has been around for ages, healing and preventing, and generally spicing up people's lives.

Known for centuries as an Ayurvedic healing root, turmeric is valued medicinally for two things: first, the volatile oil, which contains a stunning anti-inflammatory. Second, for the actual pigment, curcumin, which has an even more intense anti-inflammatory: the power of hydrocortizone or Motrin, but without the hideous side effects (such as ulcer formation, intestinal bleeding, and diminished white blood count.)  Curcumin simply has no toxicity.

Among its most astounding properties, is the ability to not only prevent cancer cells, but also inhibit their growth. This is major.

Oh, yeah, and she also dramatically increases the antioxidant capacity in the body, improves brain function, lowers heart disease, can prevent and treat alzheimer's, helps arthritis, and is proven as effective as Prozac in beating depression. Without putting s**t in your system.

Here's the (spice) rub: The actual curcumin content in ground or fresh turmeric is not all that high. You'd have to ingest crazy amounts of it daily to combat the really bad stuff. For acute conditions, or heavy duty prevention, you should be taking a turmeric extract. But for general awesome health and feeling good, add the spice everywhere you can: to curries, shake elixirs, veggies, grains...actually pairing turmeric with cruciferous veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, etc.) profoundly increases the ability to fight cancers.

Turmeric also needs a little help to be absorbed onto the body, so it's a good idea to always pair it with black pepper, and, as it is fat soluble, a little oil is a smart addition. Depending on the recipe, you could add some coconut oil for cooking or baking, olive oil on top, or a nut milk in a brew.

Speaking of, try this gorgeous ancient potion, Vixen-style:

Golden Elixir

  • 2 Cups unsweetened almond milk, or coconut milk
  • 1 Tbsp ground organic turmeric
  • 1 tsp organic cinnamon
  • Nutmeg, pinch
  • Cloves, pinch
  • Black pepper, 2-3 grinds
  • 1 tsp coconut oil (optional)
  • Organic stevia or raw coconut nectar

Heat the nut milk on a slow flame, whisking in the spices until they are smooth. When it's hot, add the sweetener to taste.

It's delicious in a weird way. You'll dig how it feels going down.

(Keep stirring it as you sip. The spices tend to hide on the bottom of the cup.)

Turmeric is also beautifying from the outside. Further solidifying its rockstar status, skin benefits include the treatment of acne blemishes, blackheads, dark spots, hyperpigmentation and other skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. It also helps heal and prevent dry skin, and to slow the skin aging process, and is used to diminish wrinkles, keep skin supple, and improve skin’s elasticity.

Interestingly, this gorgeous sunny spice is also being used as an ingredient in sunscreens. And our East Indian sisters rely on it as a daily facial cleanser and exfoliant.

Magically-speaking, turmeric has long been burned for purification. In India, it is burned to detect the presence of dark spirits or daemons. (They are said to detest the smell.)

I'm hooked.

Get on this, and try my Pumpkin Peau de Soie Facial'll groove on the results!

Sultry Beasties, I'm off to make some Golden Elixir,

and enjoy a little down time.

Sending you cozy nuzzles,

and sweet kisses,

xxx Alise

Midsummer Beauty

Midsummer, I thought you'd never arrive.

But here you are.

And I am head over heels in love with you.

In lust, too, with your Sun-kissed afternoons,

and and your sultry midnights.

I wanna bask in your firelight,

dance beneath your star sky,

sip your nectar,

until I am drunk with your pleasures.

Bare shoulders, bare legs, bare feet.

your heat,

with mine...

Revel in the deliciousness of these languid, lush moments, my Darlings.

It's all too fleeting.

The Summer Solstice is all about fulfillment. If you set some major intentions for the year back in Winter, ask yourself: Are you still aligned with those energies? Are you making strides on the physical plane to achieve your dreams? You have a beautiful opportunity to reinvigorate those energies right now.

Midsummer Night by Edward Robert Hughes.

Midsummer Night by Edward Robert Hughes.

I want to take your hand and guide you along the firefly path,

revealing beauty secrets along the way...

Here, my Cats, are my most beloved potions of Summer:

Alba Botanica Very Emollient Sunscreen  - How do I love thee? Let me count the ways: A UVA/UVB broad-spectrum SPF 30 that's chemical-free, water-resistant, made with skin-worshipping ingredients (aloe, lavender, chamomile, & vitamin E), and doesn't harm coral reefs. And did I mention? It's vanilla scent is intoxicating.  Really, it is. Come closer...

Mineral Fusion Mineral Beauty Balm SPF 30 - I am a rabid fan of DermaE's BB Créme most of the year, but I like to switch over to this one when it's very hot and humid, and skin is more prone to odd little breakouts. I also think it's great for people with oily skin. Its look is slightly chalky right out of the tube, like a zinc oxide sunscreen (which it contains), but absorbs completely once you blend it into the skin. The finished effect is purrfectly matte, leaving your face nourished and exquisite, even in the steamiest of situations...

Acure Organics Seriously Hydrating Toner - I adore this, all year long. That same light, soothing mist that calms dry or irritated skin all Winter long is a superstar cooling spritz and a post-sun lifesaver. Bonus: it will perk up a dull midday face even better than a smile from a sexy co-worker.

Alba Botanicals Very Emollient Sunless Tanner - My Mediterranean/Celtic heritage has gifted me a complexion that is at once both very fair and olive, which can often look pretty sallow. A mostly-raw diet has helped my skin immensely over the past two years, both in texture and in tone, giving me a much healthier, radiant look overall. But still...I want a golden glow. All the time. Possible? Yes! But I wouldn't use anything else. This sunless tanner is gorgeous: subtle, purrfectly natural looking, moisturizing, and free of nasty parabens and other dirty little chemicals. So, for an allover gleam, or to fill in a spotty day in the sun, this one is awesome.

Vapour Organics Solar Translucent Bronzer - Speaking of golden, oh my Goddess, this bronzing stick is fantastic!  The color is stunningly sheer, the texture sublime, and the tube holds more product than you may ever need in this lifetime. A must-have in your beauty bag.

Simplers Carrot Seed Essential Oil - My most beloved beauty oil. This deity is not only contains high levels of vitamin A, E, and beta carotene, it's also a powerful detoxifier and skin rejuvenator, offering a natural SPF of 40. I place a few drops in the palm of my hand mixed with a moisturizer or oil (argan and jojoba being my faves,) and massage it into my face every morning. Magic, indeed.

DIY Insect Repellant - Pick up a few cute 2 or 3oz spray bottles in the cosmetics/samples/travel section of your local department store for pennies, and fill them with witch hazel, rosewater, or lavender water (you can get the witch hazel there too, or in a pharmacy, and the flower waters in your health food store), add in 1/2 teaspoon of vodka (optional, as a preservative,) and  50-60 drops eucalyptus essential oil (recognized by the CDC as a natural replacement for DEET,) 20 drops cedarwood essential oil, 20 drops citronella oil, and 20 drops rosemary or lemon essential oil. Now add in your own signature oil, at least 12 drops, until it smells divine, like You, not You Covered in Bug Spray. Shake it all up. Keep one at home, stash one in the car, and one in your bag. Shake before each use, and give yourself a good spritz when you're outdoors. Even in a cafe at night, it's chic.

No Miss Nail Polish - You've seen this brand in almost every health food store, though only in a handful of the 150 luscious colors that the website offers. Glossy and quick-drying, these lacquers are free of harmful chemicals but contain sunscreens, are cruelty free, and are easy on your wallet. Do pick up their It's Dry Topcoat while you're at it - it will greatly extend the life of your home manicure. My Midsummer color pick? Crazily enough, the oddly named Winter Garden Wheat (pictured), which looks nothing at all like wheat, Winter or otherwise. It's a purrfectly peachy kitten dessert for your pretty claws that goes with absolutely everything.

Acure Organics Castile Soap - How can it be both refreshing and moisturizing? But it is! Get ready for anything with a splash of this as a body wash, bubble bath, household cleaner, animal shampoo, human shampoo, laundry soap...even a tooth cleanser! Excellent idea in a travel bottle, no? With gorgeous organic coconut, sunflower, castor and argan oils, you can't possibly go wrong. I adore the subtle Peppermint and Citrus scents, but my fave is the unscented, because you know me...I love to concoct potions. I like to add my own essential oil blends to this sublime base to suit my every mood. Note: This is a new product. Click here for a store locator.

Acure Organics Lip Lush - I'm not usually a fan of gloss, as it wavers between plastic-sticky and and runny-gooey. But ohh..this one.  Lush, plush, and unbelievably sensual, it delivers argan oil, Echinacea Stem Cell (increasing hydration and elasticity,) and the rockstar Eidelweiss Stem Cell (that not only contains antioxidants, but fights the breakdown of dermal layers and prevents breakdown of collagen,) all laced up in gorgeous sheer shades! My faves are the starlit Birthday Suit and juicy pink Shmexy. Now that, my bee-stung beauties, is gloss.

Now you're all ready, Lovers, for your Midsummer night's scene.

Dance with me.
